At 80 million years old (give or take), the Rockies are relatively young as far as mountain ranges go. But they’re not the Earth’s first attempt at piling up a bunch of rocks in that part of the world. Roughly 300 million years ago, an entire mountain range formed in what’s now the middle of North America…and then vanished.
